The history of SVA best comes to life in the many stories of young women it has motivated, inspired and empowered to achieve goals they may have never before dreamed possible. From its founding in 1869 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, the Academy has successfully prepared its students to excel in all facets of life – personal and professional. Originally established as a finishing school for young women and an elementary school for boys and girls, the Academy continually adapted to its changing urban environment and today is the only women’s private high school in the city of Newark.
By blending its 138-year tradition of excellence with the most current thinking in curriculum and instructional design, the Academy is able to defy the odds every day – providing some of the most deserving urban women with the skills, education, and Christian values needed to better themselves, their families and their community.
